If you asked Derek his place in “Lix” he would say, ‘I just jump around on
stage, and let them do all the work’. Of course in actuality he does a great deal
more than that. Having been influenced heavily by Led Zeppelin music when he first
began playing the bass, he definitely tries to add something to “Lix” in a similar
way that John Paul Jones did for Zeppelin. “I liked the fact that the Jones’ bass
wasn’t the lead instrument, and yet, it definitely wasn’t just a background filler
either.” Says Derek. “I guess because I listened to Zeppelin so often when I first
started playing, I try and imitate that a little bit,” “I want the audience to hear
an actual bass line in the song, I don’t want to just play the same notes that the
guitar plays.” And because of his efforts he provides a very solid bass line, and
is a heavy influence in every aspect of “Lix”. He particularly loves to be the one
out in front live, singing lead from time to time; he is always putting all of
energy on the line for the crowd. “When I’m on stage I just can’t stand still.” Jay
and Brad often feed off his energy, which brings out a solid, tight, performance by
all. Yes Derek is definitely the third piece of the puzzle that “Lix” can’t do without.
